Humble tax collector Ning Tsai-Shen arrives in a small town. Unsurprisingly, no one wants to give him shelter, so he ends up in the haunted Lan Ro temple. There, he meets Taoist Swordsman Yen Che-Hsia and the beautiful Nieh Hsiao-Tsing, with whom he falls in love. Unfortunately, she is a ghost, bound for all eternity by a hideous tree spirit.
