In post World War III Tokyo, Kaneda, the leader of bike gang, must rescue his friend Tetsuo, who had gotten involved in a secret government project known as Akira. On his mission, he confronts anti-government activists, greedy politicians, irresponsible scientists, and a powerful military leader. In the meantime, Tetsuo's psychic powers emerge.
