During the Chinese Civil War in 1948, a Liberation Army captain and his 47 soldiers are ordered to defend a coal mine until a bugle calls for retreat. The captain never hears the call, and all his men are killed. Unacknowledged for their bravery, the captain spends years seeking recognition for the sacrifice of his troops.
