In 1940, Lieutenant Kurokawa returns home an honored and decorated soldier, but without his arms and legs lost in battle in China. All hopes of the village turn to the Lieutenant's wife, Shigeko, who must honor the Emperor and Japan by setting an example for all by fulfilling her duty and taking care of her husband.
