China 1999. Childhood friends Zhang and Liangzi are both in love with Tao, the town beauty. Tao eventually decides to marry the wealthier Zhang, and they soon have a son he names Dollar. From China 2014 the story fast forwards to Australia 2025, observing a family over two generations in a society transforming rapidly.
