Friends Junbao and Tianbao grow up as monks in a Shaolin temple. They are both expelled after a vicious fight with a competitor who cheated. Tianbao joins the military, while Junbao joins rebels opposing the government. Hungry for power and wealth, Tianbao betrays Junbao in an ambush and attains the rank of general. Grief-stricken, Junbao turns to Tai Chi.
