1930s Korea, during Japanese occupation, a young woman is hired as a servant by a Japanese heiress who lives on an estate with her domineering uncle. The handmaiden is actually a pickpocket recruited by a swindler posing as a Japanese count who is planning to seduce the heiress, rob her of her fortune, and commit her to an insane asylum.
