Under constant threat from Rouran tribes, the Chinese army conducts a nationwide draft, and enlists retired soldier named Hua Hu. Although skilled in martial arts, his daughter Mulan is forbidden to fight because she is a woman. Mulan tricks her father, steals his armor and weapons, and disguises herself as a boy to serve her country.
